- Students presented innovative Robotics solutions in the qualifying rounds for the 2023 World Robot Olympiad
- 224,000 students and teachers have benefited from COSMOTE’s initiatives and activities related to robotics and STEM
The 7 teams that will represent Greece at the World Robot Olympiad™ 2023, to be held from 7 to 9 November in Panama, have been selected following the qualifying rounds in Greece for the World Robot Olympiad organised by WRO Hellas, the Educational Robotics, Science and Technology non-profit organisation, and COSMOTE as strategic partner.
The World Robot Olympiad (WRO) is a major international event for science, technology and education. It fosters child and youth creativity throughout the world while also bolstering problem-solving ability. The
World Robot Olympiad 2023, with the focus for this year being “Connecting the world”, has attracted the participation of teams from over 90 countries.
The qualifying teams
The robotics projects of the Greek teams which participated in this year’s qualifiers for the World Robot Olympiad in the Robo Mission (REGULAR), Future Innovators (OPEN), Future Engineers and RoboSports categories explored how robots can help connect people and countries (digitally and in person) safely, efficiently and sustainably.
The qualifying teams, which consist the Greek delegation and will represent our country at the World Robot Olympiad are: Μinders, Smartbirds, BitLab1, Teamword Happines, Save Energy, JoFre, and Evripos Robotics.
The Minders team presented their Aqua Byte project, a plan to host and process data on server farms based on the seabed. The installation of these server rooms on the seabed makes good use of the low local temperatures. If the server room identifies a malfunction (via sensors), it transfers the data to another server and surfaces. Once on the surface, it is located (via camera) and an auto-piloted recovery craft is sent to collect it.
The Smartbirds team constructed an autonomous floating robotics system which can utilise GPS to reach anywhere on the planet. It is equipped with wireless technology capable of transmitting telecommunications signals, while it also functions as an IoT station to collect environmental data. It should be noted that the team has represented Greece in previous Olympiads, taking 3rd place worldwide in 2017 and 2nd place in 2019 in those years’ World Robot Olympiad finals.
BitLab1, a team from Kalamata, qualified in the RoboMission and RoboSports categories with its exciting new game Double Tennis.
The category with the most participations and thus competition was RoboMission, where students programmed their robots on the day of the competition and made on-the-spot programming changes based on the surprise rule they learned on that day, just like in the World Robot Olympiad itself. The teams that qualified were the Teamwork Happiness team from Patras for primary schools, the Save Energy team from Larissa for junior high schools, and the JoFre team from Attica for high schools.
Finally, the Evripos Robotics team from Central Greece qualified in Future Engineers, the self-driving car category, after coming out on top in the competition, held in Chalkida.
7 medals and 18 top-ten positions for Greece at the World Robot Olympiad
Greece has participated in the World Robot Olympiad since 2009 and has won 7 medals and 18 top-10 places to date. In fact, in last year's Olympiad, Greece came 1st in Europe and 4th worldwide among 73 participating countries.
COSMOTE’s sustainable development initiatives and activities for educational robotics and STEM have benefited in total more than 224,000 students and teachers, and are part of COSMOTE’s strategy for responding to social challenges, such as digital inclusion. Because a world in which technology is accessible to all is a better world for all.
