VITAL Research Project (2/2015-7/2017)
Objective: to combine terrestrial and satellite telecommunication networks through NFV / SDN technologies.
OTE participated in the VITAL European research project (https://cordis.europa.eu/project/id/644843), which aims at network resilience based on the combination of terrestrial and satellite networks by pursuing two key innovation areas: (a) bringing Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) into the satellite domain and (b) enabling Software Defined Networking (SDN)-based, federated resources management in hybrid SatCom-terrestrial networks.
The solutions developed in VITAL will enable improved coverage, optimized communication resources use and better network resilience, along with improved innovation capacity and business agility for deploying communications services over combined networks.
VITAL- VIrtualized hybrid satellite-TerrestriAl systems for resilient and fLexible future networks
As part of the project, OTE participates in the identification of the use-cases, the definition architecture, the development of the network resources virtualization framework and the overall system evaluation. Moreover, the company contributes to the dissemination and exploitation of the project results and the investigation of potential business models.
The project is co-funded by the EU through H2020 Program and will run for 2 1/2 years (2/2015-7/2017) while it is being implemented by 9 entities from 4 countries (Greece, Italy, France and Spain).
