- Target to reach 80% by the end of 2022 and 90% in 2023
- 5G Stand Alone network will deploy at the end of next year
The population coverage of
COSMOTE 5G –Greece’s largest 5G network– has surpassed 70% countrywide. By the end of 2022, population coverage will reach 80% in Greece, and the new ambitious goal for the end of 2023 is 90%. In addition, at the end of next year, 5G Stand Alone (SA), the next stage in the development of the 5th-generation network, will also go into operation.
5G Stand Alone (SA) will be an autonomous network with new architecture, and the backbone network will be entirely cloud-based. Thanks to these features, 5G SA will offer even more capabilities, such as dynamic slicing of the 5G infrastructure’s network resources. A network slice is a virtual network with specialized features (bandwidth, latency, security, etc.). Each network slice is fully adapted to the needs and requirements of the various applications that users need at different times. This is very important for vertical markets, as it enables the creation of multiple, configured and independent networks that are located on a common multi-domain infrastructure.
“
Thanks to the intensive work of our technicians, our network is rapidly growing. From Corfu and Thrace to Crete, the Dodecanese and Kastelorizo, residents and visitors can enjoy the unlimited capabilities of 5G, while we continue to work intensively to bring the future in every corner of Greece. At the same time, we are working on the next stage of 5G development – 5G Stand Alone – which is the basis for innovative applications that require real-time network response, such as autonomous driving and 5G campus networks,” said OTE Group’s Executive Director Network Development & Operations, Giorgos Tsonis.
New 5G areas
New regions that can enjoy COSMOTE 5G speeds include areas in the Dodecanese: Rhodes, Karpathos, Kasos, Kastelorizo, Kos and Leros. In Crete: Agios Nikolaos Lasithi, Rethymno and Chania; On the mainland: Halkidiki, Lamia and Kamena Vourla, as well as the islands of Limnos and Paxoi. By the end of the year, the network will be further extended to various regions of the Peloponnese, as well as to Samos and Ikaria.
5G speeds for visitors as well
Foreign visitors from 51 countries who travel to Greece can enjoy COSMOTE 5G speeds and capabilities.
5G Roaming is also available to customers of COSMOTE, the first provider in Greece to enter into agreements with foreign networks, ensuring that its subscribers also have access to the 5G experience abroad. COSMOTE has already secured 5G-roaming agreements for its subscribers on networks in 48 countries around the world.
