Aim: To develop a truly viable and efficient infrastructure to support 5G wireless communications

OTE participates in the BlueSPACE European research project (, the aim of which is to vastly improve the performance of the global 5G infrastructure that is currently being planned, and address the challenges of increased capacity, scalability, manageability and resource allocation of 5G networks by adopting a pragmatic yet disruptive and future proof approach.

BlueSPACE will exploit the added value of Spatial Division Multiplexing (SDM) in the Radio Access Network (RAN) with efficient optical beamforming interface for the pragmatic Ka-band wireless transmission band; both to be seamlessly integrated into next generation optical access networks infrastructures, using massive beam steering capabilities while ultrafast and flexible network management control will be supported.

In the context of the project, OTE participates in the definition of the optical interfaces and the RAN integration with PONs, the identification of the system-network requirements, the definition of evaluation scenarios and testing activities as well as in the implementation and evaluation of the prototype.

The project is co-funded by the EU through the Horizon 2020 Programme, within the scope of the 5G-PPP phase 2 framework and is scheduled to run for 3 years (06/2017-05/2020). BlueSPACE is being implemented by 15 partners from 8 countries (Greece, Netherlands, Spain, Germany, France, United Kingdom, Poland, Italy).
