- 5G introduces unlimited possibilities due to much enhanced Mobile Broadband speeds and latency
- Modernization of the 2G/3G/4G/4G+ COSMOTE mobile access network
COSMOTE will proceed to the development of its 5G network in Greece in collaboration with Ericsson. The selection was the result of a tender procedure. At the same time, COSMOTE proceeds with the full modernization of its mobile access network, fully replacing its 2G/3G/4G/4G+ equipment with new, which will enable COSMOTE to gradually upgrade its network to 5G.
ΜThe new equipment will enable COSMOTE to continue offering a seamless mobile Internet experience and high-quality voice services to its customers, wherever they are. Moreover, it will significantly improve the energy footprint of COSMOTE’s 2G/3G/4G/4G+ mobile network, being more environmentally friendly and reducing energy consumption.
5G technology, the next generation of wireless communication, is expected to initiate an era of extremely high speeds and unlimited possibilities. 5G enables the provision and management of new interactive and smart services on all connected devices in almost real time. It can serve up to 1,000,000 devices per square kilometer and it offers maximum speeds of up to 10Gbps. The latency (network response time) will be as low as 1 millisecond at a 99.999% reliability. 5G will become a lever for the growth of the global economy, with applications in various areas such as industry, health, telecommunications, transport, smart cities, education, entertainment and more.
The roll out of COSMOTE 5G will be subject to the auction of the required spectrum, which is planned by the National Telecommunications and Post Commission (EETT) to be held in the Q4, 2020. COSMOTE’s 5G services will be commercially available within 2021. At the same time, COSMOTE plans to stop providing 3G services after 2021, in order to make use of the available spectrum resources for more advanced technologies (4G/4G+/5G).
OTE Group Chairman and CEO, Mr. Michael Tsamaz, stated on the occasion: “
5G is the future of telecommunications and a necessary precondition for the Gigabit Society. It is the underlying technology which will be used by all the innovative applications that will change our lives in the near future. OTE Group creates the state-of-the-art infrastructure that our country and society need in the new digital era. We invest heavily to enable our customers to enjoy the innovative services and products brought by 5G. With technology and innovation, we create a better world for all."
George Pappas, Managing Director at Ericsson Hellas, says: “
COSMOTE’s trust in Ericsson for this landmark 5G and network modernization deal is yet another proof of our technology leadership. 5G is an innovation platform set to digitally transform industry, businesses and society across the world. It is with a great sense of the responsibility that we accept COSMOTE’s decision to work in close partnership with them to make 5G a reality in Greece and bring its enormous benefits to all its customers.”
OTE Group: In the driver’s seat with regards to 5G technology research and development
OTE Group is intensively preparing for 5G, which is the future of telecommunications. COSMOTE has already implemented the first 5G test network in Greece, in the Municipality of Zografou, a suburb of Athens, achieving live speeds of over 12Gbps. At the same time, OTE Group contributes to the design and development of new 5G technology, infrastructure and services, by participating in 22 European research projects which aim at enhancing the competitiveness of the European telecommunications market at a global level. Thus, it enhances its know-how in new generation mobile telephony from the earliest stages of technology development and is actively engaged in designing and evaluating future technology solutions, commercial applications and innovative business models.
