aerOS
Autonomous, scalablE, tRustworthy, intelligent European meta Operating System for the IoT edge-cloud continuum
(09/2022 – 08/2025)
Aim: To design and build a virtualized, platform-agnostic meta operating system for the IoT edge-cloud continuum.
The aerOS project aims at transparently utilising the resources of the edge-to-cloud computing continuum to enable applications delivery in an effective manner and incorporate efficiently the multiple services deployed on this path. Practically, aerOS focuses on establishing the missing piece: a common meta operating system that follows a collaborative IoT-edge–cloud architecture supporting flexible deployments (e.g., federated or hierarchical), bringing important benefits through the distribution of intelligence and computation – including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), and big data analytics – to achieve the optimal deployment while satisfying any given constraints.
The aerOS solution, to be incorporated on any “Infrastructure Element” within the IoT edge-cloud continuum – hence, independently from the underlying hardware and operating system(s) –will:
deliver common virtualized services to enable orchestration, virtual communication (network-related programmable functions), and efficient support for frugal, explainable AI and creation of distributed data-driven applications;
- expose an API to be available anywhere and anytime (location-time independent), flexible, resilient and platform-agnostic; and
- include a set of infrastructural services and features addressing cybersecurity, trustworthiness, and manageability.
The aerOS project will validate its results in five use cases, addressing: (i) Industry 4.0, (ii) utilities (renewable energy), (iii) smart agriculture, (iv) port transportation and logistics, and (v) smart buildings.
COSMOTE is leading the “Energy Efficient, Health Safe & Sustainable Smart Buildings” use case to be deployed and validated in an actual office building of COSMOTE in Athens, Greece. This use case builds upon the e2e IoT platform developed by COSMOTE R&D, already used in various R&D EU funded projects (e.g.
Interconnect,
AEOLUS,
LIFE SAFE-CROSSING,
5G-VICTORI,
5G-COMPLETE) and installed in many residences in Athens and COSMOTE’s sites. The COSMOTE IoT platform architecture will be transformed to conform to the aerOS Infrastructure Element concepts, and leverage the technologies delivered by the project.
The aerOS project is implemented by a consortium of 27 partners from 11 countries, is led by the Universitat Politécnica de Valencia (Project Management) and the National Centre for Scientific Research “DEMOKRITOS” (Technical Management).
