5G ESSENCE
Embedded Network Services for 5G Experiences
(06/2017 – 11/2019)

Aim: To develop an integrated cloud-based small cell management platform for 5G networks.

OTE participates as project coordinator in the 5G ESSENCE (http://www.5g-essence-h2020.eu/) European research project, which aims at the development of an integrated cloud-based small cell management platform for 5G networks.

5G ESSENCE addresses the paradigms of Edge Cloud computing and Small Cell as a Service by fuelling the drivers and removing the barriers in the Small Cell market, forecasted to grow at an impressive pace up to 2020 and beyond and to play a key-role in the 5G ecosystem. 5G ESSENCE provides a highly flexible and scalable platform, capable of supporting new business models and revenue streams by creating a neutral host market and reducing operational costs by providing new opportunities for deployment, operation and amortization. The technical approach exploits the benefits of the centralization of Small Cell functions through an edge cloud environment based on a two-tier architecture: a first distributed tier for providing low latency services and a second centralized tier for providing high processing power for computing-intensive network applications.

Τhe project investigates three real life use cases of market interest, associated to vertical industries: (i) Edge network acceleration in a crowded event within a stadium; (ii) mission critical applications for public safety (PS) communications providers, and; (iii) in-flight entertainment and connectivity (IFEC) communications.

As part of the project, OTE is contributing to the description of the scenarios and use cases, the identification of user/system requirements and specifications, the definition of system architecture and its overall evaluation through pilot testing in the laboratory and in the field. Additionally, the company participates in the dissemination and exploitation activities, while acting as Project Coordinator.

The project is co-funded by the EU through the Horizon 2020 Program, within the scope of the 5G-PPP framework of Phase 2 and has a duration of 2.5 years. 5G ESSENCE is being implemented by 22 entities from 8 countries (Greece, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Poland, Italy and Cyprus).
