How can I access the COSMOTE 5G network?
The COSMOTE 5G network can be used by all COSMOTE subscribers, with no additional charge.

All you need is to have a 5G device, certified in the COSMOTE network, and to be in an area with COSMOTE 5G network coverage. We are working closely with all major manufacturers so that more and more devices can eventually become certified and provide access to COSMOTE’s 5G network.

What is a 5G network?
5G is the 5th generation of mobile networks. It is the fastest and most reliable mobile technology developed to this date, offering very high data speeds, significantly increased capacity and ultra-low latency. 5G is designed to meet the enormous data growth and connectivity needs of today's society and to effectively support billions of Internet of Things devices connected simultaneously, as well as innovative applications that will dramatically change the way we live and work.
How fast will 5G be?
The COSMOTE 5G network is already available in Athens, Thessaloniki and other cities in Greece, while in certain areas the COSMOTE 5G network exceed 1Gbps maximum Mobile Internet Speed.

Initially, the average speed will be approximately the same as that of the COSMOTE 4G + network, while latency times will drop to about 10ms. As we move forward with the development of the COSMOTE 5G network and start using the 3.5 GHz band, speeds will be steadily increasing while latency will be reduced to almost zero.

Once fully developed, 5G will make it possible to install and manage new, interactive and smart services across all connected devices, in almost real time. The network will be able to serve up to 1,000,000 devices per square kilometer and allow maximum speeds of up to 10Gbps. With ultra-low response time (latency) of 1 millisecond, and five-nines communication reliability, for the first time ever we will get to use internet applications while experiencing a sense of “real time”.
What are the benefits of the 5G network?
  • Extremely high speeds of up to 10Gbps (x10 times faster than 4G).

  • Almost zero response time (latency) as it will drop to 1 millisecond and simultaneous communication reliability to 99.999%. Features that will take the Virtual & Augmented Reality experience to the next level and make applications such as remote surgery and live holographic phone calls a reality.

  • The 5G network will be able to serve up to 1,000,000 devices per square kilometer, therefore paving the way for Internet of Things, through which many additional devices, such as cars and home appliances, will eventually become connected via mobile networks.

  • Up to 100 times more network capacity, allowing many more people to be served at the same time even when using services demanding high speed and quick response times or connecting from densely populated areas.

What do I need to do to access the COSMOTE 5G network?

Access to the COSMOTE 5G network is available to all COSMOTE subscribers, individuals and companies, with no additional charge and regardless of their chosen mobile telephony plan (contract, card contract, prepaid).

All you need is a device certified for 5G usage within the COSMOTE network updated with the latest software and to be in an area with COSMOTE 5G network coverage.

Your 5G device will automatically switch to the COSMOTE 5G network. Alternatively, you can text “5G” free of charge to 1333.

Which areas does the 5G network cover?

COSMOTE 5G network has the widest population coverage in the country. It is already available in 60 cities and Islands across Greece, offering 97% coverage in Athens and 90% in Thessaloniki and maximum speeds which, in certain areas, exceed 1 Gbps.

COSMOTE 5G network will continue to expand to even more areas throughout the year, in accordance with our goal to achieve over 80% countrywide coverage by the end of 2022.

If you are using a compatible 5G device in an area that does not have 5G coverage, your phone will automatically switch to the available signal and then automatically reconnect to the COSMOTE 5G network as soon as you return to an area with 5G coverage.

Is it possible to turn off 5G?

If you are using a 5G-enabled device but do not want to connect to the 5G network, you have the option to disable 5G access using the menu on your device (Network Settings).

Alternatively, you can send a text containing the words "5G END" (free of charge) to 1333 at any time.

Does 5G pose any health risks?

5G technology does not pose any health risks. COSMOTE follows all international radio frequency exposure guidelines, which are based on extensive research and include also the frequencies used for the development and operation of 5th generation networks.

Do you participate in research projects?

We participate in 19 research projects funded by the 5G Infrastructure Public Private Partnership (5G-PPP), through which the European Union aims to enhance the competitiveness of the European industry on a global level.

In this way, we contribute to the design and development of new 5G technologies, infrastructures and services, as well as to the advancement and evaluation of future technological solutions, commercial applications and innovative business models in sectors such as smart cities, e-health, smart transport, education, entertainment and media.

Will I be able to use 5G when traveling abroad?
Yes. 5G Roaming is already available in Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, China, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Kuwait, Latvia, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Oman, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, South Korea, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, United Kingdom, USA and Virgin Islands (US) for all of our subscribers, and it will soon expand to more countries.

Will the 4G network be replaced by 5G?

The 5G network will not immediately replace 4G. These two networks will coexist for some time, just as it happened in the case of the 4G and 3G networks.

Along with the expansion of the 5G network, we continue to invest in the development of our 4G network, aiming to continuously ensure the best experience for our subscribers, wherever they may be.

How will the COSMOTE 5G network work?

The 5G network will operate in three different frequency ranges, which will complement each other in order to ensure that, whether you are connecting from a remote rural area or a densely populated urban setting, you will be able to enjoy all the endless possibilities this new technology has to offer!

How? These three frequencies are designed to work like different pieces in a puzzle:

Mid-Band 3.500 Mhz

This frequency is ideal for densely populated urban areas or large open spaces such as stadiums, where multiple devices are used simultaneously and high capacity is required.

Its key features include ultra-high speeds that will initially reach or exceed 1 Gbps, very high network capacity, virtually zero response time (latency) and a limited coverage range.

 

Mid-Bands 1.800/2.100 Mhz

The frequencies best suited for urban centers are at the mid level are as they combine high speeds with good geographical coverage, therefore offering satisfactory capacity and adequate response time.

 

Low-Band 700 Mhz

Low-band frequencies have speed performance similar to 4G and very large geographical coverage, which is their main advantage. The range of coverage in this level is not affected by obstacles such as buildings, adverse weather conditions, etc., rendering it an ideal solution for the countryside and offering reliable connectivity when connecting from either indoors or outdoors.
