Smart Waste Management

But technological developments and, more specifically, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and the Internet of Things (IoT) gives new capabilities that enhance sustainability and help us more efficiently manage the resources needed to improve the urban environment. This is being achieved through the participation of citizens, municipal authorities and local businesses in the daily life of the city.
COSMOTE is facilitating this transition to new Smart Cities through innovative technologies and solutions. These solutions are applicable to various aspects of city life and are offered through a ‘smart’ services platform and an integrated networking infrastructure. Smart Waste Management is one of these solutions.
The CO2 emissions produced by municipal waste-collection vehicles, in combination with the cost of collecting waste, are having a significant impact on human health, atmospheric burdening in cities, and municipal spending.
Smart Waste Management is a system for remote monitoring of the fill level of bins and optimisation of the collection and transport of waste. It consists of a wireless ultrasound sensor that measures fill levels and a Web application that manages the system and analyses data. It also includes a mobile application for routeing drivers and managing work orders.
Optimisation of waste collection contributes to an immediate reduction in costs (up to 50%), through minimising waste collection routes. It also contributes to reducing CO2 emissions and averting bin overflow, thus helping to create a cleaner and more sustainable environment.
